FIRST COMMUNION

Westwood practices open communion, meaning people of all ages, theological backgrounds, and levels of training are welcome to commune.

How it works.

We offer once a year communion training (usually in February) and welcome people of all ages to participate. If you would like your child to experience a more traditional first communion, we have stole kits for them to decorate following a training and they are welcome to wear them the first Sunday they commune. Contact Alison Broman with questions.

Our Theological Understanding.

Communion is one of two sacraments in the Lutheran church. At Westwood, we believe that communion is a gift for each and every one of us, and that it can be taken by anyone who understands that it is a gift for them, at any age and in any way appropriate to their development. All are welcome at God’s table, a table where we are forgiven, taken as we are, and strengthened to be the hands and feet of Christ in the world.
